Parents can be given geriatric care by addressing their medical, emotional, and daily living needs through a blend of family support, professional help, and community resources.
Key Components of Geriatric Care which I felt from my experience.
- Conduct a holistic assessment of parents’ health, including physical, emotional, and social aspects.
- Develop a personalized care plan involving family members, healthcare professionals and social workers for ongoing support.
- Manage chronic illnesses and medications by regular monitoring and coordination with specialists.
- Arrange for assistance with daily living activities, hygiene, and nutrition if needed; professional caregivers or home aides can be brought in for complex needs.
- Ensure safety at home by making modifications like installing handrails, removing tripping hazards, and using medical alert systems.
Practical Steps for Families
- Have open discussions with parents about their wishes and expectations for care.
- Delegate responsibilities among family members and hold regular discussion to monitor care and support.
- Assess your own capacity as a caregiver and seek professional help if necessary, especially for health management and personal care.
- Explore financial and legal considerations for long-term care, including insurance and available government schemes (Medisep etc).
- Stay connected with local senior care organizations for services like meal delivery, transport, and respite care.
Enhancing Quality of Life
- Focus on creating a safe, comfortable environment for elderly parents at home.
- Encourage hobbies, gentle exercise, and social engagement to reduce loneliness and depression.
- Involve specialized visiting therapists (physiotherapist etc) as recommended by doctors to help with mobility, cognitive function, and rehabilitation
These strategies, when adapted to each family’s needs and circumstances, can lead to meaningful and sustainable geriatric care for elderly parents.
This is what I gained from my experience which I am still continuing and feel blessed that God has given me the opportunity to take care of them the way they feel comfortable and happy.
